BOB’S MODEL COLLECTION
Spirit of St Louis - Revell 1/48 Scale
This kit was part of my re-introduction to modeling after many years. Painting the big wing without too many flaws was a big challenge. In the end, with a bit of scratchbuilding on the tail, it was fun to make and inspired more projects.
The Spirit graphic on the nose is actually four decals, that lay down very well and are meant to look like the open mesh of the actual plane.  It is effective and might be the only way to reproduce that look in a model without big photoetch. After a few years, the wing got a rebuild, with new parts and Mission Models Faded Aluminum paint. The old wing showed some glaring rookie mistakes and it was driving me nuts. And it was a good chance to test the Mission Models metallic paint. Results are good and soon the unfinished struts will also be painted, I promise.
